Our Role

As part of your role as an Procurement Apprentice, you will work within our Procurement team, learning our processes, supporting the team and helping achieve results, all whilst learning and developing as an individual.

Working from our head office in Great Notley, Braintree, Essex, as part of your apprenticeship you will be enrolled on a Level 3 Business Administration course and will attend regular online sessions and workshops and/or attend Colchester Institute on day release.  The apprenticeship will be completed over a 18-month timeframe.

The following is a list of the key activities that you will be engaged in whilst working with our Procurement team:

  • Send out enquiries for appropriate materials, collate and analyse quotations;
  • As required, place orders with suitable suppliers for specified materials ensuring goods are delivered on the required date and purchased at the most competitive rates and within budget;
  • Consolidate purchases of materials to achieve maximum economic benefit;
  • Chase deliveries from suppliers that are overdue or urgent;
  • Use pre-authorised buying deals unless authorised otherwise by the Managing Buyer;
  • Process invoices queries;
  • These are illustrative duties and the post holder will be expected to become involved in a range of work to enable the department to respond effectively to the requirements of the company.

Our role

This is the perfect opportunity to ‘earn while you learn’ as an Apprentice Groundworker. You will work in an established business to add real value and gain experience from our accomplished site teams. Our Apprenticeship programme offers you personal and professional development, enabling you to develop and become a valued member of the team.

Working on site, as part of your apprenticeship you will be enrolled on a Level 2 Groundworker course and will spend a weekly day release at West Suffolk College (Bury St Edmunds).  The apprenticeship will be completed over a two-year timeframe.

What you'll be doing

  • You’ll learn a host of civil engineering principles, such as concreting, excavation activities and drainage, as well as the processes involved in basic project management, health and safety, and levelling and setting out.
  • Gaining hands on experience whilst working on a ‘live’ site
  • Working as part of a team
  • Attending college weekly on day release

What you’ll need to have:

  • An interest in the construction industry
  • Maths and English GCSE Grades 2-3
  • Functional skills will be studied if equivalent qualifications are not held
  • Access to a vehicle and driving licence (preferred)
  • The ability to get to/from site, and to college.

Apprentice Quantity Surveyor / Estimator

Our Role

As part of your role as an Apprentice Quantity Surveyor/Estimator, you will rotate working in our Commercial and Estimating teams, learning our processes, facing challenges and driving results, all whilst learning and developing as an individual.

Working from our head office in Braintree, Essex, as part of your apprenticeship you will be enrolled on a Level 4 Construction Quantity Surveying Technician course and will spend a weekly day release at Anglia Ruskin University (Chelmsford).  Following completion of L4 and EPA, you will then complete a Level 6 (Top up degree apprenticeship) BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying, accredited by CIOB.  The apprenticeship will be completed over a 4 ½ year timeframe.

The following is a list of the key activities that you will have the chance to learn about whilst working alongside our teams.

  • Construction Procurement, including tendering and estimating;
  • Construction Contract Law, including the elements of a legally enforceable contract and legislation;
  • Quantification and Measurement, including assessing the cost of works through different stages of a project;
  • Quantification and Costing, including commercial costs, measurement and pricing tools;
  • Risk, Value and Environmental Impact, including how various factors impact a project.

Your Development

  • Gain a solid understanding of our Commercial and Estimating practices and processes, developing your skills whilst supporting the team to deliver results;
  • Build compelling working relationships, collaborating effectively with both internal and external customers, stakeholders and suppliers;
  • Communicating with the team both verbally, such as meetings and phone calls, and through written means, such as letters and emails;
  • Attending regular university sessions and workshops to successfully obtain a Level 6 Construction Quantity Surveying Degree Apprenticeship qualification;
  • Support the department with duties, such as: updating commercial records, databases and files, creating financial status reports, responding to customer queries and liaising with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Contribute as a valued member of the Commercial/Estimating Department, supporting in the delivery of company strategy, targets and objectives, whilst adhering to our company values.

Your Skills

  • Knowledge of our company and what we offer;
  • Aptitude for Maths and attention to detail;
  • Great communication skills, with the ability to communicate verbally and in writing;

We have an excellent opportunity for an experienced and motivated Estimator to join the Tamdown Estimating team. In this role, you will be instrumental in managing and successfully delivering the Company's tender enquiries. Your efforts will ensure that tenders are competitive, of the quality expected by the Business and its customers and delivered on schedule.

What we are looking for

  • Strong, proven background within Estimating within a similar organisation with knowledge of Groundworks and RC Frame works
  • HNC in Civil Engineering/ Appropriate degree /post graduate qualification
  • Member of a Civil Engineering/ Construction institute would be desirable
  • Access to a fully serviceable and appropriately insured vehicle
  • Understanding of House Building contracts and contractual precedents
  • Knowledge of Estimating methods and techniques (Use of QS CAD / Causeway Estimating)

Key responsibilities

  • Analyse tender enquiry documentation to assess the requirements of the customer and the project
  • Be the point of contact for the customer; find out the customer needs and raise & answer queries
  • Engage key stakeholders as part of our internal sales process to ensure we are effective in our approach to sales and estimating
  • Carry out a detailed site visit with key stakeholders to assess the site conditions and constraints
  • Carry out required take offs and ensure these are adequate and in line with the company procedures
  • Gather and critically analyse quotations from sub-contractors and suppliers ensuring costs are adequately fixed and there is adequate resource to fulfil the project requirements
  • Produce bills of quantities in line with the company procedure taking into consideration labour, plant, sub-contract and material requirements
  • Produce final forecast margin’s; addressing potential risks and opportunities
  • Sanity check own work in line with company procedures to ensure work is correct and accurate
  • Ensure the tender process has been followed and appropriate gate forms signed for governance
  • Analyse contract documentation to assess the impact of proposed terms and conditions
  • Ensure we submit proposals to customers that fulfil their requirements and are of the expected quality
  • Return tenders in customer agreed timescales
  • Attend customer presentations and provide information in a professional manner
  • Investigate and price value engineering
  • Handover secured projects to the development team ensuring the customer requirements have been fully understood and that the gate process has been administered to ensure process governance
  • Utilise Assistant Estimators to support with tendering and provide training where needed

Group Financial Controller

Providing support and assistance to the CFO, this is an integral function of the Group with overall responsibility for the preparation of accurate and timely consolidated Management Accounts and Management Information across all businesses.

What we are looking for

An ACA/CIMA/ACCA qualified accountant.  You will need to have a strong, proven background within management accounts along with a high level of self-motivation and drive. Experience within the construction industry would be beneficial but not essential.

Key responsibilities

  • Preparation of consolidated monthly management accounts including P&L, balance sheet and cashflows for the Group.
  • Preparation of consolidated month end reporting packs with supporting analysis.
  • Review of Nexus Infrastructure and Nexus Park monthly management accounts.
  • Preparation of reporting information for Group Executive team.
  • Lead the annual year end audit process.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Responsible for all switchboard duties and distribution of calls throughout Nexus Park
  • Opening, sorting and distributing in-coming post
  • Responsible for the collection, franking and postage of all out-going post, processing recorded and special deliveries
  • To provide information to callers, deal with queries, take and relay messages clearly and concisely
  • Maintain stationery stocks and oversee the ordering of new supplies in a cost-effective manner
  • Carry out fire alarm testing & other required duties of Fire Marshall
  • To provide general administration and clerical support as required
  • Meeting and greeting visitors including the signing in of all visitors
